Remember that saying, “Don’t judge a book by its cover”? Well, Morningstar is an excellent illustration of that. You approach the course through a residential neighbourhood. The pro shop and clubhouse are modest, but the course… oh, the course. Morningstar is a hidden gem on Vancouver Island.
This golf course was built to be a tournament-ready, championship course and has hosted 3 PGA of Canada events since opening. This is not an easy track, and I’m surprised that this isn’t more of a destination for golfers from around Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland. Based on how the course is laid out, there are opportunities for being long off the tee, but also holes that require better-than-average course management to save par.
One of the signature holes on this course is Hole 9, a beautiful par five that combines a few favourite elements; trees that can make your ball disappear, a sizable water hazard and a hole that’s barely visible from the tee box.
Long off the tee, trying to cut the trees could be tempting. However, aiming to be to the left of the trees just beyond the first water hazard sets up a nice second shot. Reaching the second water hazard is a much better strategy that leaves you with a reasonable approach if you can stick it on the green. It’s tempting to go for the green in two, and good golfers could with a solid drive and a longer iron. The more average golfer, like myself, is happily running to the right, avoiding the water and still being on the green in three. A very doable GIR.
Morningstar is a course you should check out. It is worth more than the price of admission.
Enjoy the Morningstar Experience! Spectacular Island views, award wining service, and attention to detail. Sitting at sea-level, our 6983-yard layout plays much longer than the yardage suggests. Morningstar is definitely a championship length golf course designed by esteemed course architect Les Furber.
Wide, impeccably maintained fairways and large quick undulating greens contribute to the unique character of our wonderful course. With multiple teeing options and four different length options per hole, Morningstar is designed to challenge the potential of every golfer.
Morningstar has time and again proven its worth by hosting professional, national, and provincial events for both men and women. Morningstar has hosted three PGA of Canada events, 2 CN Future Links Pacific Championships, the 2007 BCGA Men’s Amateur, the 2010 Golf Canada Senior Ladies National Championships, and the 2014 Golf Canada’s Women Tour.
Annually, Morningstar hosts the ever challenging ‘Ironman Tournament’. Both Professionals and Amateurs travel from all over to test their skills with one of the hardest playing conditions Morningstar has to offer.
